Chalk Paint vs Mineral Paint: What's the Difference?
Chalk paint is matte, porous, and built for distressing. Mineral-style, all-in-one paint typically self-seals and skews more durable. But brand naming doesn't always match the category — read the formulation, not just the label.
The short answer
- "Chalk paint" usually means matte, porous, easy to distress, and often needs a separate sealant.
- "Mineral paint" usually means more durable and closer to self-sealing — but usage varies by brand.
- Dixie Belle's own "Chalk Mineral Paint" is, by Dixie Belle's own description, chalk paint — not mineral paint.
What does "chalk paint" mean?
"Chalk paint" began as a trademarked product name (Annie Sloan's Chalk Paint™), but the term has since become a generic category descriptor across the furniture-paint industry: a matte, porous formula that typically needs little to no sanding, takes distressing well, and often benefits from a separate wax or topcoat for durability.
What does "mineral paint" mean?
"Mineral paint" generally points to a different formulation — often more durable, less porous, and closer to self-sealing out of the can. That said, the label alone isn't a guarantee: how durable or self-sealing a "mineral" paint actually is depends on the brand's specific formula, not the word on the can.
Where the naming gets confusing
Dixie Belle sells two lines with "mineral" in both names — Chalk Mineral Paint and Silk All-In-One Mineral Paint — but only one of them behaves like mineral paint. Per Dixie Belle's own blog, Chalk Mineral Paint is chalk paint: matte, porous, built for distressing. Silk All-In-One is the one with the built-in primer, stain blocker, and topcoat that actually behaves like a self-sealing mineral formula.
Despite having “mineral” in the name, Chalk Mineral Paint isn't mineral paint — it's chalk paint.
